BIM-based occupational health and safety

Application of the Building Information Modelling method and use of RFID technology to improve occupational health and safety in the construction and real estate industry.

Construction is characterised by a high number of risk factors, e.g. work with a risk of falling, handling hazardous substances, time pressure, weather influences and still high physical stress. The use of the BIM method will decisively change cooperation within the construction industry in the future. This also includes the potential to provide sustainable impulses for preventive occupational health and safety.

The primary goal of the research project is to identify, define and standardise information relevant to occupational health and safety and to make it available for preventive measures using the BIM method. The digitalisation and the resulting media continuity of occupational safety and health-relevant process data along the life cycle of buildings should fundamentally improve occupational safety and health protection.

At the beginning of the project, occupational safety-relevant processes are identified and defined with regard to information depth and information content. Using the BIM method, the cross-company planning of the target processes relevant to occupational health and safety can now begin and, through the additional use of AutoID techniques, (partially) automated actual process data can subsequently be recorded, digitised and linked to the BIM building models, thus optimising occupational health and safety during the construction execution and operator phases. The expected results will support and facilitate the tasks of prevention.
