Solar Decathlon Europe 21/22 meets Building Information Modeling

The international university competition "Solar Decathlon Europe" is coming to Germany for the first time in 2022. 18 teams from eleven countries will come together in Wuppertal to plan, build, operate and present solar houses with a neutral or even positive energy balance on the surrounding grounds around the former Mirker Bahnhof railway station building in Wuppertal-Elberfeld.

From 20 May to 2 June 2022, the planned designs will be set up as 1:1 scale demonstrations on the Solar Campus site, which will be open to visitors for a fortnight from 10 June 2022, accompanied by guided tours and a variety of events around the SDE21/22.

Work package

Creation of a BIM modelling guide for the building data models of the demonstration units of the Solar Decathlon Europe 2021/22

Organiser: Bergische Universität Wuppertal

Funders: Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie sowie energy endeavor Foundation

Project term: 03/2021 – 06/2022

The BIM method is being used for the first time in the history of the Solar Decathlon, so that the building data collected can be used for other applications in the future, such as for research purposes.

For this purpose, the Institute for the Management of Digital Processes in Construction and Real Estate/BIM Institute of the University of Wuppertal has created a BIM work package for the teams, which is based on the institute's BIM-Modellierungsrichtlinie:

The application of a modelling guideline is intended to ensure that the building data models provided by the teams have a uniform structure and can be further used for future applications. By recording the terrain with the help of a drone and providing an environment model based on this, the placement of the models of the individual teams into a holistic model is ensured. In addition, the quality of the delivered results is checked, evaluated and assessed by the institute by means of regular checks.
